Excitement is running high among Mahayuti members as the alliance heads towards a landslide victory in the Maharashtra election 2024. Comprising the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Ajit Pawar NCP faction and the BJP, the alliance now has another big task of picking the Chief Ministerial candidate.
Addressing the media on Saturday, incumbent Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, who had been the CM twice earlier, said that the new Maharashtra Chief Minister will be selected after a consultation among all the MVA leaders.
“There will be no dispute about who will be the Chief Minister… it was decided from day one that, after the election, the leaders of the three parties will sit together and decide this,” Fadnavis clarified on Saturday.
“The decision will be acceptable to everyone,” he emphasised.
Soon after the
Maharashtra election result 2024 started coming in, speculations intensified on who will be the next chief minister.
Many have been saying that Fadnavis could get a third term as BJP alone is leading on 129 of 149 seats it contested, surpassing its previous best of 122 seats in 2014.
However, leaders of Shiv Sena advocate for Eknath Shinde’s continuation as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, arguing that the 2024 state poll was fought under his leadership.
Talking to the media after the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed Mahayuti leading in Maharashtra, Shinde in his first reaction extended “heartfelt thanks” to people of the state.
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to my beloved sisters, farmers, youths, and all segments who have voted for us. I had said before that Mahayuti will get a thumping victory. I also thank all the workers of the Mahayuti parties. This is a reflection of the work we have done in the last 2.5 years,” he said.
“The mandate is actually a big responsibility on us now,” Shinde further said.
On the CM candidate, Shinde said, “No decision on the Chief Minister candidate has been taken yet. Mahayuti will decide the next steps.”

In June 2022, Fadnavis announced Shinde’s name as CM despite the latter’s faction having fewer MLAs than the BJP.
Talking to the media, Shinde also said, “The unprecedented victory that people of Maharashtra have given us establishes the fact that Maharashtra is with PM Modi.”
“Realising the PM’s slogan of ‘Ek Hain Toh Safe Hain’, people from all walks of life in Maharashtra have voted in unity and because of that, we have got this victory. I thank our Ladli sisters, Ladle brothers, Ladle farmers and everyone. Moreover, the fake narrative created in Lok Sabha polls and the powers which were spreading that fake narrative here, all the national forces defeated that fake narrative,” he further said.
Fadnavis also said, “This is the victory of Mahayuti, CM Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Ramdas Athawale, this is the victory of unity.”
