A situation of gang war emerged when former BJP MLA in Uttarakhand, Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion, reportedly opened fire with his supporters at the residence of Umesh Kumar, sitting Independent MLA of Khanpur in Haridwar district. The area echoed with the sound of gunfire in broad daylight. A video has gone viral on social media which purportedly shows Kunwar Pranav Singh opening fire along with his supporters.

After reports of firing and assault at his residence, Khanpur MLA Umesh Kumar was enraged and rushed to confront Pranav with a pistol. Reacting to the video, Haridwar SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal says, “A video of firing at the residence camp office of MLA Umesh Kumar by former MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion is going viral… Police have taken Suo moto cognizance of this and whoever is involved will be subjected to necessary legal action…”

Who is Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion?

Kunwar is a former MLA from the Khanpur constituency. He was elected for the fourth consecutive time from Laksar and Khanpur till 2022. The 58-year-old also served as a cabinet-rank official in the previous state governments under the former Chief Minister ND Tiwari, Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat.

He joined the BJP in 2016 after quitting Congress. He was elected as a BJP MLA after the 2017 election. Kunwar was suspended for 3 months from BJP on 23, June 2019, following his feud with another lawmaker Deshraj Karanwal.

In July 2019, the party extended the suspension of Pranav for an indefinite period because he appeared in a controversial video which showed him dancing with guns and comparing the size of the state he represents to his genitals. The video went viral on social media, causing embarrassment to the party.
