Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024. His last rites are scheduled to take place at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Dr Singh served as the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, following Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His tenure is most remembered for his strong leadership during economic crises and his significant efforts to modernise India’s economy. After stepping down from office, he retired from public life, leaving behind a legacy of growth and global recognition for India.

Throughout his career, he was known for driving key reforms, including economic liberalisation, and the landmark India-US civil nuclear agreement. One of his most famous quotes, “History will be kinder to me than the contemporary media,” is still widely shared today.

Despite facing criticism for his quiet leadership style, he remained committed to his duties. He and his family were known for keeping a low profile, avoiding the media spotlight even during his time in office.

Dr Singh was married to Gursharan Kaur in 1958. Together, they had three daughters: Upinder, Daman, and Amrit.

Upinder Singh, the eldest daughter, is a well-known history professor and the Dean of Faculty at Ashoka University. She has written several books and was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences in 2009. She is married to author Vijay Tankha.

Amrit Singh, the second daughter, is a prominent human rights lawyer and a law professor at Stanford University. She has worked on numerous global human rights issues.

Daman Singh, the youngest daughter, is a professional writer. She has authored books such as The Last Frontier and Strictly Personal, a biography of her parents. She is married to Ashok Patnaik, who is an IPS officer.
