Crimes and atrocities against women, amid Kolkata doctor rape and murder that has shook the world, found a special mention at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on India’s 78th Independence Day on Thursday at the Red Fort in New Delhi.
The Prime Minister stressed that the crimes against women must be probed at the earliest and also emphasises to widely publicise punishments for those committing them to create a fear of consequences.
Without specifying on any particular case, PM Modi said that there is an outrage in the country over the issue of women’s safety and that all stakeholders need to take it seriously.
Speaking on the increasing crimes against women, the Prime Minister said: “As a society, we must seriously address the atrocities against our mothers, sisters, and daughters. There is anger among the people because of this. I can feel that rage.”
“Crimes against women must be probed as soon as possible and those who commit monstrous crimes should be punished as soon as possible,” he said.
‘Crucial to instill fear’
The Prime Minister went on to say, “It is the need of the hour that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging. I think it is very important to instill this fear.”
“Those who commit these crimes should know they will face the harshest penalties,” he said.
The PM continued by saying that this would help to build faith in the society.
PM Modi even pointed out that while such crimes and violence incidents receive significant media coverage initially, the attention often fades away by the time the culprit is held accountable.
“There should be discussions about the convicts too, so that such criminals feel fear in their minds…,” he added.
The statement of the Prime Minister came amid rage among doctors and people across the country following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal’s Kolkata.
The semi-naked body of the trainee doctor, who was on night duty last Thursday, was found at the seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9. Earlier, police claimed she had died by suicide, but the autopsy report confirmed that she was raped and murdered.
The brutal crime has raised fingers at the West Bengal government-led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party, Trinamool Congress (TMC). The state was considered to be one of the safest for women in the country.
The Kolkata hospital rape and murder case was handed over to the CBI on Tuesday and pressure has been mounting on the agency to catch hold of culprits at the earliest and ensure they get harshest of punishments.
