Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday conducted an aerial survey after he arrived in Kerala to visit the landslide-hit district of Wayanad. He was received by Chief Minister Pinrayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.

PM Modi landed at Kannur International Airport on Air India One close to 11 am following which he departed for Wayanad accompanied by the governor, chief minister and Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi.

In Wayanad, PM Modi will visit a relief camp and a hospital where he will meet and interact with the victims and survivors of the landslides, officials have said. Following this he will chair a review meeting during which he will be briefed in detail about the incident and the ongoing relief efforts.

Leader of Opposition and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday welcomed PM Modi’s decision to visit the disaster-stricken region and called for the government to declare it a national disaster.

During the rescue operations, the Indian Army erected a 190-foot Bailey bridge in Wayanad, which has been crucial in facilitating the movement of heavy machinery and ambulances.

Meanwhile, at least 226 people died and many remain unaccounted for after landslides hit the region on July 30 in what is seen as one of the biggest natural disasters to have impacted the southern state.
