Cyclone Fengal accompanied by heavy rainfall has thrown life in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry out of gear. In Tamil Nadu, 14 districts have been badly affected by the natural calamity, forcing Chief Minister MK Stalin to seek relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Stalin and assured him of all possible help.
Soon after his conversation, Stalin, in a post on X, said he was sure that PM Modi will consider Tamil Nadu’s request for assistance and take appropriate measures.
“I reiterated my letter to the Hon’ble Prime Minister that the state government is dealing effectively with the disaster and relief assistance is being provided to the affected people, and (asked him) to provide relief to the people of Tamil Nadu due to this storm and to send a Union committee to carry out a detailed assessment of the storm damage,” read the post by Stalin, loosely translated from Tamil.
Stalin informed that 12 people have been killed in the cyclone which has also caused massive damage to infrastructure.
Cyclone Fengal made landfall between Puducherry and neighbouring Tamil Nadu on November 30. It weakened on Sunday, but incessant downpours under its influence continue to pound several parts of the state and union territory.
Amid this, a video from Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district went viral on social media, showing several cars and buses toppled near Uthangiri bus station after being dragged from a road to low-lying areas. Some vehicles gradually being swept away in the rapidly flowing flood waters.
Krishnagiri has been worst affected in the state due to heavy rains that triggered floods.
Stalin listed the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupathur as having received extremely heavy rainfall and witnesseddamages.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu, south interior and coastal Karnataka on Tuesday (December 3).
Heavy rainfall is also predicted over north Kerala. Parts of north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and south interior Karnataka are also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.
As per ANI, schools in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu have been shut owing to the rainfall prediction. Schools and colleges will also remain closed in Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry.
