The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has shared a video purportedly showing the car of a party leader being fired at.
The BJP on Wednesday is organising statewide protests in West Bengal amid a call for a 12-hour statewide strike. The protest and strike are a response to police actions on demonstrators on Tuesday who were marching to the state secretariat in Kolkata in protest against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s stance in the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
BJP leader and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) in which he said people are seen firing at the vehicle of party leader Pryangu Pandey. He said the attackers belonged to the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Adhikari further said that the driver of the vehicle was shot in the attack.
Injuries to protesters have been reported in West Bengal amid alleged police excesses. In a separate post, Adhikari alleged that two party functionaries and other workers suffered serious injuries in violence of the police and TMC cadres. He said the incident happened at Ballavpur.
“Brute force is being unleashed to attack peaceful demonstrators and agitators. Police brutality is official recognition of the success of the statewide bandh,” said Adhikari.
In the rape-murder of the doctor in Kolkata, the BJP has alleged that the state government was engaged in a cover-up.
“Mamata Banerjee’s administration is in overdrive to cover up the rape and murder of a resident doctor in RG Kar MCH. Kolkata Police has apparently arrested a ‘civic volunteer’ for the crime, when as per media reports, the body of the deceased had 11 grievous injuries, with even her eyes bleeding. It seems, even forensic experts have opined that she was raped for a long time before being murdered,” said BJP leader Amit Malviya earlier this month.
Following criticism over the handling of the case, the Calcutta High Court had transferred the case from the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
