Hours ahead of Delhi Airport Terminal-1 roof collapse, a portion of a canopy of the new terminal building of Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur airport caved in and fell on a car.
Officials at the airport said that the fabric canopy put up to beautify the ‘drop and go’ area at the Dumna airport collapsed around 11:30 am on Thursday (June 27) due to the accumulation of water amid heavy rains.
“It ripped under the weight of the water and the water fell with great force on a car parked there,” airport director Rajeev Ratna Pandey was quoted as saying by PTI.
The car which got damaged in the incident belonged to an Income Tax official. No one was injured in the incident as the driver of the vehicle had left after parking it in the porch outside the main gate of the terminal building.
Pandey further informed that the project officer has been directed to carry out a probe and strict orders have been issued to ensure that such an incident doesn’t recur.
The Rs 450-crore new terminal building of the Dumna airport was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10.
A report by The Indian Express quoted a senior official as saying, “It must be understood that the building is newly-constructed and has experienced its first rain. The investigation will determine any technical faults, and the project in-charge of this building is also being consulted.”
Recently, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had announced that the airport would be renamed after queen Rani Durgavati.
Meanwhile, on Friday morning, one person was killed and four others were injured after a portion of the roof of the old departure forecourt of Delhi airport’s Terminal-1 collapsed on cars.
