Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi made her political debut on Wednesday by filing her nomination for Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha by-poll.

After a mega roadshow in Kalpetta, Priyanka headed to the district collectorate and submitted her papers before the District Collector and Returning Officer.

She was accompanied by her mother and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, her brother and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other national and State leaders of the party were also present.

Before filing her nomination, Priyanka, around 11:45 am took out a roadshow from Kalpetta in Wayanad. A large number of Congress workers from Wayanad and nearby Kozhikode and Malappuram districts participated in the roadshow.

She was accompanied by Rahul Gandhi, Congress state president K Sudhakaran and Indian Union Muslim League state president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal in an open vehicle.

During the rally, Priyanka said she began being part of political campaigns in 1989 when she was 17 when she canvassed votes for her late father Rajiv Gandhi.

Priyanka also said that she considers it an honour to be chosen to represent the people of Wayanad.

She further said that she was deeply touched by the courage shown by people of Wayanad at the time of landslides that hit the district.

The by-election in Wayanad was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi, who has been representing the seat since 2019, vacated it to retain Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh after he won both seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in April.

The Wayanad bypoll will be held on November 13. Priyanka will contest against veteran CPI leader Sathyan Mokeri and Kozhikode municipal councillor Navya Haridas of the BJP.
