BJP leader Karan Bhushan Singh became the center of a controversy on Wednesday when a vehicle in his convoy collided with a bike in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of two persons, including a 17-year-old.

Karan Bhushan Singh, a BJP candidate contesting for the constituency of Kaiserganj during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls is the son of six-time MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had made headlines following accusations of sexual harassment against him by female wrestlers which led to a high-profile agitation against him by some the top wrestlers in the country.

Recently, charges in the case against him were established by a Delhi court. The accusations prevented the BJP from giving him a ticket this time around. Rather, his son Karan, also a wrestling administrator, was fielded by the BJP. Pratik Bhushan Singh, his other son, is an MLA representing the Gonda constituency.

Images from the crash scene showed the errant SUV, which has “police escort” printed on the rear glass, indicating that it is part of a VIP convoy. It is registered in the name of Nandini Nagar educational institution, which is owned by the family of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Chanda Begum, the complainant, filed a formal complaint alleging that at approximately nine in the morning, her son Rehan, 17, and her nephew Shahzad, 24, were travelling on their bike when the speeding SUV coming from the opposite side struck the two-wheeler and killed them instantly. Sita Devi, 60, was hurt and taken to the hospital. Following the accident, a large group of family members flocked to the scene.

The SUV has been taken into police custody and the driver, Luvkush Srivastava, is under arrest. Whether Karan Bhushan Singh was part of the cavalcade at the time of the incident is still unknown. According to senior police officer Radheysham Rai, an autopsy has been performed on the victims’ bodies, and an investigation is ongoing.

According to Farman Khan, a relative of the victims, the injured had been taken to the hospital and there was blood on the road after the incident.
