A US military aircraft with 104 Indian nationals landed in Punjab’s Amritsar on Wednesday.

The plane carried Indians deported for residing illegally in the United States. The action comes amid US President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Out of 104 persons deported by the Trump administration, 33 are from Haryana, 33 from Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, three each from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra and two from Chandigarh. There are a total of 79 male passengers and 25 females.

On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to remove all illegal immigrants from US soil and start the biggest deportation drive in the country’s history. Within days of assuming office, federal authorities began deportations.

As of 2022, there were 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, according to Pew Research Center. Of them, around 725,000 were said to be from India.
