Twenty coal-loaded wagons of a freight train derailed near Vrindavan Road station in Uttar Pradesh around 8 pm on Wednesday (September 18), a railway spokesperson said.

The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of National Capital Region (NCR) railway zone said that the derailment has blocked three rail lines “which has brought the train traffic at halt on Mathura-Palwal route.”

He said that efforts are on to clear these lines as soon as possible.

The spokesperson said this route has a fourth line as well. “We are trying to figure out if there is no infringement of the fourth line,” he said.

Train derailment in Bihar

This was the second train derailment incident of the day in India. Earlier, around 5 pm, four wagons of a mechanical rake derailed near Narayanpur Anant yard in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.

Following the accident, over 10 trains had to be diverted, and some others had to be short-terminated, the East Central Railway CPRO Sharswati Chandra told PTI.

“The incident has caused disruption of rail traffic on the route. Mechanical and other technical staff are on the job to restore services,” he had said.

Amid frequent train accidents, directives to authorities

In an important step to avoid train collisions, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar has written to the general managers of all 17 zones asking them to monitor technical reports generated by a device called data logger on a daily basis.

Data logger is fitted at stations and it records real time data of all aspects of train operations as well as the signal system.

It generates an exception report in case a station master fails to take steps to ensure that a train does not come on the same track already occupied by another train.
