In India, the news cycle was dominated by two shocking crimes – the Pune Porsche hit-and-run case and the gruesome murder of a Bangladeshi MP, who was in Kolkata for medical treatment.

The election season is drawing to a close. Phase 5 was held on Monday and today is Phase 6, the penultimate one. Mumbai went to polls at the start of the week and it is Delhi’s turn today. We saw some
big netas and abhinetas flocking to election booths

It is yet another cruel summer in India. Heatwaves have gripped large parts of the country and are taking a toll on people. Even one of India’s biggest superstars Shah Rukh Khan was not spared… he grabbed headlines (in India and internationally) as he was hospitalised following a heat stroke. All’s well now with King Khan.

This and more in our weekly roundup, where we help you understand the news.

1. Let’s talk about Mumbai and elections. India’s financial capital went to polls this Monday. But as expected the voter turnout was poor. This year 54.1 per cent turned up to vote, the second-highest Lok Sabha turnout in the city in three decades. (Nothing to boast about.) It is 1.3 per cent lower than the 2019 polls. So what is it that keeps Mumbaikars away from the polling booth? Is it the heat? Or is it apathy?

2. The Pune Porsche case has been dominating headlines throughout the week. A 17-year-old allegedly driving the supercar crashed into a motorcycle in the wee hours on Sunday and killed

.

Initially, the minor got away with
writing an essay
. But after growing outrage, he was sent to a remand home. So
what happens next
? Will he be tried as an adult? What do India’s laws say? We tell you in
this explainer
.

3. The other big crime story comes from Kolkata. Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar reportedly came to India for medical treatment but went missing soon after. He was murdered in the most gruesome way. His body was dismembered, the skin peeled off, the bones cut. An illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, who is a butcher, has been held for the crime. Here’s the
complete story.

4. Hospitals in India have a problem at hand – they are facing an acute shortage of nurses. The nurse-to-patient ratio is already poor and it’s only getting worse. Around 3.3 million nurses are registered; this number is inadequate for the billion-plus population. Now the medical staff is quitting in droves.
Here’s why

5. Talking about hospitals. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan found himself in one. He suffered a heat stroke, was admitted on Wednesday, and was discharged later. However, this is not an isolated case. Thousands in India are at risk as several parts of the country are reeling under an intense heatwave.

The rising temperatures can harm the body. Heat stroke like the one that King Khan suffered from should not be taken lightly. We
explain
what it is and its impact on health.

6. While the heatwave is dangerous to health, it also impacts the Indian economy. Extreme temperatures lead to low productivity; outdoor activities like construction are forced to halt. A harsh summer is not good news for farmers.
