Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he is not contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, but it’s the 140 crore people of India who are contesting these elections.
In an interview with Network 18 in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, Modi said that the people’s relationship with him does not end with elections. He said that people don’t just remain connected with him but they want connect with him even more.
“Modi is not contesting these elections. The 140 crore people of the country are contesting these elections. I have a long experience in elections. I understand the mood of the people. I can understand their feelings. For them, the elections are much more than just an election. For them, it does not end when they cast their votes. They have not given a contract to Modi with their vote, but they have connected with Modi, and they want to connected with me even more,” said Modi in Hindi.
Modi was in Varanasi on Tuesday to file his nomination as a candidate for the Lok Sabha elections. He has held the seat since 2014 and is now seeking a third straight term as the Prime Minister of India, which would be unprecedented in decades.
In Varanasi, Modi was accompanied by top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders for the filing of his nomination, such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, and Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde.
‘Youth weaving their dreams with my success’
Modi said that the people of India have finally seen a governance model that combines a commitment for a developed India with their dreams.
Modi emphasised that the youth of the country are with him and those young people who were children when he came to power have only seen Indian achievements and not the bad days.
“The younger generation, who never saw the bad days, those who were just five- or ten-years-old in 2014, have seen the development of digital India. They have seen India reaching Moon, becoming a hub of green hydrogen, and the rise of start-ups. They see that India’s doors are open for the world. The youth of the country are weaving their dreams with my success,” said Modi.
‘Nervousness is not in my dictionary’
When asked if he is nervous as he contests Lok Sabha elections for the third time, Modi said that the word is not in his dictionary at all.
Modi said that every iota of his life has gone for the people of the country as they are deserving of it and were treated unjustly for 70 years.
“The word ’nervousness’ is not in my dictionary. I have done a lot of penance in my life. I have give every iota of my life for my fellow Indians and I have done all of this because people of this country are very deserving. They were treated with injustice for 70 years. Whenever someone wipes off their tears or thinks of a toilet for them, they cannot forget such moments,” said Modi.
Varanasi, the constituency of Modi, will go to polls on June 1 in the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha elections. The counting of votes will take place on June 4 and results are expected on the same day.
