Justice N Kotiswar Singh is set to become the first Judge from Manipur to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Along with Justice Singh, Justice R Mahadevan, who is currently the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, has also been appointed by the Government of India (GoI) as the new judge of the Supreme Court.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, July 16, by Union Minister of State for Law & Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, on X, following the assent from President Droupadi Murmu on collegium resolution recommending elevation of Justice Singh and Justice Mahadevan to the apex court.
On July 11, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended to the Union government to appoint Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice N Kotishwar Singh and Madras High Court acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan as judges of the apex court.
After an intensive four-hour meeting, the collegium led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy unanimously decided to give Manipur its first representation in the Supreme Court after more than 50 years of its statehood.

The appointment of Justice Singh as a Judge of the Supreme Court will provide representation to the North-East.
1 – Justice N Kotiswar Singh originally hails from Manipur
2 – On October 17, 2011, he was appointed as a Judge of the Gauhati High Court
3 – After the formation of the High Court of Manipur, Justice Singh was transferred as a Judge of that High Court from the Gauhati HC.
4 – Justice Singh was appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on February 15, 2023
5 – Justice Singh is due to retire on February 28, 2025.
Justice R Mahadevan, the second judge to be appointed to SC
Last week, the Collegium has taken due note of the fact that Justice Mahadevan ranks third in the order of presently serving judges of the Madras High Court including the Judges who have been posted as Chief Justices outside the Madras HC.
The Collegium has given precedence to the candidature of Mr Justice R Mahadevan in order to give representation to the backward community
Currently, Justice Mahadevan is serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
He belongs to a backward community from the State of Tamil Nadu and his appointment will bring diversity to the Bench.
