The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta, 50, as Delhi Chief Minister, who is set to succeed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi.

The announcement was made after a key meeting of the legislators held at the party’s Delhi unit headquarters in the national capital on Wednesday, i.e., February 19.

Rekha Gupta, who won the Shalimar Bagh constituency in the recently concluded Delhi assembly polls, defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari with a significant margin of 29,595 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

As per media reports, BJP MLA from New Delhi constituency, Parvesh Verma, proposed Gupta’s name for the Chief Ministerial post. Pertinent to note that after Sushma Swaraj, Rekha Gupta is the second female BJP Chief Minister of Delhi and fourth female Chief Minister of the national capital.

Soon after the announcement, Rekha Gupta’s supporters distributed sweets and held celebrations outside her residence in Delhi. Gupta’s pick as Delhi CM falls in line with the saffron camp’s Mantra of GYAN – Gareeb, Yuva, Annadata and Naari.

The saffron camp secured 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi assembly polls 2025, the AAP won 22 seats. The Congress party, for a third time, failed to open its account.
