Shortly after he inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University at Bihar’s Rajgir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that the rebuilding of Nalanda University is going to start the “golden era of India” and the new campus will give the world an introduction to India’s capability.
Addressing a gathering during the inauguration, PM Modi said, “The rebuilding of Nalanda is going to start the golden era of India…Nalanda’s reawakening, this new campus, will give the world an introduction to India’s capability…”
Expressing his happiness over the opportunity to visit Nalanda within the 10 days of his swearing-in, the Prime Minister said that his mission is to make India the centre of education and knowledge to the world.
“My mission is to make India, the centre of education and knowledge to the world. My mission is to again make India’s identity emerge as the world’s most prominent knowledge centre…today more than 1 crore children are getting the benefits of exposure to the latest technology in Atal Tinkering Lab…,” said PM Modi.
“He said Nalanda is not just a name, it is an identity and respect. Nalanda is a value and mantra…fire can burn books but it can’t destroy knowledge”
The inauguration of the new campus was also graced by Governor Rajendra V Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
Speaking on the occasion, Jaishankar said that in the rebuilding of Nalanda University, there are multiple messages, both national and international.
“Nalanda University served a larger role by connecting our society with those near and far neighbours through land and sea…the universities destruction marked a downturn in our history and is continued through the colonial period. In that era, we not only saw a decline in our capabilities and confidence but in our connectivity as well with those nations who are now members of the East Asia Summit. In the rebuilding of Nalanda University, there are multiple messages, both national and international,” he added.
Before inaugurating the new campus, Modi visited the ‘Nalanda Mahavihara’, a UNESCO world heritage site located close to the varsity.
The educational institute was established through the Nalanda University Act in 2010 and it started functioning in 2014.
The ancient Nalanda University, which existed since the fifth century, attracted students from all over the world. It flourished for 800 years before being destroyed by invaders in the 12th century, according to experts.
