Days after his remark on reservation stirred controversy, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi clarified his statement saying that what he meant was that the Congress Party would increase the cap on quota beyond 50 per cent.
Gandhi, who was on a three-day visit to the US, said on Wednesday, “Yesterday someone misrepresented my statement that I am against reservation. But let me make it clear – I am not against reservation. We will take reservations beyond the limit of 50 per cent.”
Earlier this, during an interaction with students at Washington’s Georgetown University, the Congress MP said, “When you look at the financial numbers, then tribals get 10 paise out of 100 rupees; Dalits get 5 rupees out of 100 rupees, and OBCs get a similar number. The fact of the matter is that they’re not getting participation.”
“We will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place. And India is not a fair place,” he added.
His comments drew the ire of the ruling BJP with Union Home Minister Amit Shah calling -Gandhi “anti-national” adding that the LoP is pushing the “anti-reservation” agenda on foreign soil.
”Rahul Gandhi’s statement lays bare the Congress’s politics of causing rifts on the lines of regionalism, religion, and linguistic differences. abolishing reservations in the country, Rahul Gandhi has once again brought the Congress’s anti-reservation face to the forefront,” Shah wrote on X.
