Pema Khandu is set to become the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third consecutive term after being re-elected as the BJP legislature party leader at the meeting in Itanagar on Wednesday.

BJP’s central observers – senior BJP leaders Ravi Sankar Prasad and Tarun Chugh – attended the meeting.

After being elected as the BJP legislature party leader, Khandu met Arunachal Pradesh Governor KT Parnaik to stake his claim to for the government in the state.

He, along with his cabinet colleagues, will take oath on Thursday, June 13.

“I thank my top leadership, party workers. Our government is being formed for the third time with the blessings of the people of Arunachal Pradesh…The meeting with the Governor has been done, the swearing-in ceremony will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 11 am. I thank the people very much…We will continue to work for the development of the state,” Khandu said.

In the 2024 Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh, BJP emerged victorious, securing a majority of 46 out of the 60 seats.

The National People’s Party got five seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party won three seats. The People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) managed to get two seats, while the Congress party got just a single seat while three seats were secured by independent candidates.

Khandu began his tenure as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on July 17, 2016, as Congress candidiate, succeeding Nabam Tuki.

In September 2016, he led a group of Congress lawmakers to defect to the PPA, a regional party, and became the CM under the PPA banner. In the same year in December, Khandu and his group rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), solidifying his position as the Chief Minister under the party’s leadership.

Khandu hails from a prominent political family in the Tawang district of Arunachal. His political career began after the death of his father, Dorjee Khandu, in a helicopter crash in 2011.

In 2011, Khandu was elected unopposed to the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Mukto constituency, a seat previously held by his father.
