At least 12 people died in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district after a passenger train coming from the opposite direction ran over them on Wednesday (January 22).

Passengers travelling in the Pushpak Express stepped down on the railway tracks near Pardhade station after someone pulled the chain due to a rumour of fire on board around 5 pm, Central Railway officials said.

Talking to PTI, a senior railway official said that preliminary information suggests that panic ensued among passengers onboard Pushpak Express led one of them to pull the chain while some people jumped off the train onto the tracks. At this moment, a Karnataka Express was passing by an adjoining track and the victims were mowed down by it.

Reacting to the mishap, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “The unfortunate incident near Pachora in Jalgaon district in which some people lost their lives is very painful. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. My colleague Minister Girish Mahajan and the Superintendent of Police have reached the spot and the District Collector will reach there shortly. The entire district administration is working in coordination with the railway administration and immediate arrangements are being made for the treatment of the injured.”
