Sixty-seven aspirants topped the NEET exams before the whole controversy over it stirred. Now, that tally has come down to 61, meaning six of those candidates were not able to outperform without grace marks, the re-examination results show.

The results for the re-test of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test were announced on Monday while the exams were held on June 23.

As many as 60 per cent of the 813 students who appeared for the re-examination, however, have improved their scores sans grace marks. Most of these students got a score of above 680. None of these students were able to match their scores to what they had achieved with grace marks.

The difference between their current scores and the previous ones ranges between 10 and 40 marks.

Eight hundred thirteen students out of the 1,563 students who were awarded grace marks appeared for the re-examination. The exams were held in the same six cities but the centres were changed to ensure the smooth conduction of the test.

Among the centres, Chandigarh, which had just two candidates, registered zero attendance. Jhajjar centre, which was under the scanner, registered 58 per cent attendance with 287 of the 494 candidates came for the test.

“At least 52 pc — 813 out of 1,563 candidates — appeared for the retest on Sunday. No candidates appeared in Chandigarh, while the numbers were 291 from Chhattisgarh, 1 from Gujarat, 287 from Haryana, and 234 from Meghalaya,” a senior NTA official said.

When the National Testing Agency announced the re-examination process, it kept two options open for aspirants. The ones who did not choose to sit for the re-test will retain their original scores without the grace marks while students who did sit for the re-exam got entirely fresh scores.

The NEET-UG examination, originally held on May 5 at 4,750 centres, saw approximately 24 lakh candidates. The results, which were initially expected on June 14, were announced on June 4 due to early completion of answer sheet evaluations.

Notably, 67 students scored a perfect 720, an unprecedented number in NTA’s history, with six from a Faridabad centre in Haryana, raising suspicions of irregularities and the role of grace marks.

The NEET-UG exam, conducted by the NTA, is for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in government and private institutions across India.
