The overnight rains have left large swathes of Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai waterlogged.
As per the weather forecast, rains are predicted throughout Sunday (July 7) in Mumbai.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 24 mm of rainfall at the Santacruz observatory till this morning and 61 mm at the coastal observatory at Colaba, according to The Indian Express.
The paper further cited data from the automatic weather system (AWS) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as showing that 47.51 mm of rains were recorded in Mumbai. Moreover, it said that 36.23 mm rains were recorded in eastern suburbs and 19.6 mm in western suburbs of Mumbai.
In nearby Thane, overnight heavy rains have submerged roads, houses, and bridges, and NDRF personnel have been deployed for relief and rescue purposes, according to CNN News 18.
In a statement carried by CNN News-18, the NDRF said that teams have been deployed at Thane, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Palghar apart from three teams at Andheri. One team is also in Thane which is involved in rescue operations in Shahpur area.
The overnight rains have increased the water stock in the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai by 4 per cent, according to BMC.
As for Sunday, the IMD has predicted intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rain in Mumbai throughout the day, as per the Mid-Day newspaper.
In recent days, the monsoon has picked up in India and is making up for rainfall deficit of June. The IMD has predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in northwest and western parts of India in the next two-three days ad over the northeast during the next five days.
Even though the monsoon had an early onset in Kerala on May 30, it lost momentum after progressing normally till Maharashtra. The monsoonal winds stalled during June 10-18 and made slow progress till June 26-27, according to the paper. It was after June 25 that the monsoon started progressing again.
