Highlighting the nature of their relationship, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday called PM Narendra Modi his brother and his friend.
Ibrahim is on a state visit to India, which is his first since assuming office in 2022. India and Malaysia upgraded the relationship to the ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ during the visit.
In a joint press-briefing with Modi, Ibrahim said that while Modi is indeed the Prime Minister of India, he has always been great to him outside of the official positions as well.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is my dost (friend). I know he is the prime minister but he is my brother. I have said to him personally and to the colleagues that his friendship is sincere not only when I am prime minister but also when I was nobody he was very kind as a true friend, and that of course is most meaningful to me and my delegation,” said Ibrahim.
After relations turned sour in 2019 when the then-Malaysian PM Mahathir bin Mohamad went after India over the revocation of the special status of Jammu and its conversion into a union territory, the current visit of Ibrahim has served as a platform for a reset of ties. This is the first visit by any Malaysian premier to India since then.
In addition to upgrading the relationship to the ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’, Modi said that the two countries will increase cooperation in the fields of modern technology like semiconductor, fintech, defence industry, AI and quantum technology.
