Eight people have been killed and seven have been injured in a blast at the ordnance factory in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district’s Jawahar Nagar area on Friday.

Initially, it was reported that 13-14 workers were trapped in the section of the factory where the blast occurred.

Later, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who hails from Maharashtra, said that eight people were killed and seven injured.

In a post on X, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed the incident and condoled the deaths. He said rescuers were working to recovering the injured. He did not give any specifics of the incident.

“The rescue teams are deployed at the site. All efforts are being made to provide assistance to those who are affected,” said Singh.

Separately, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that 13-14 workers were stuck after the roof of a unit collapsed in the blast at the ordnance factory, according to preliminary information.

In a post on X in Marathi, Fadnavis said that district officials were at the spot and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel from Nagpur were on the way to the site to assist rescuers.

The PTI reported District collector Sanjay Kolte as saying that the blast occurred around 10.30 am.

The news agency further quoted a police official as saying that there were 14 workers working in the section at the time of the blast. The official added that three of them were rescued alive and one body was also recovered.
