Maha Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world and being held after every 12 years, it attracts crores of devotees. The mega events kicked off on Monday with an expectation of around 40-45 crore devotees participating in the 45-day event.
The budget of Maha Kumbh is estimated to be around Rs 6,382 crore. It is expected to generate a revenue of Rs 25,000 crore for the state. However, according to an earlier statement by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government the Mela had a potential to generate at least Rs 2 lakh crore over 45 days.
The government’s claim is supported by Awanish Awasthi, the current advisor to chief minister Yogi Adityanath and former IAS officer, who calculated the numbers. “The worth of this financial activity could be an underestimation of the actual figure. If one pilgrim spends Rs 8,000 for Mahakumbh, the number would cross Rs 3.2 lakh crore going by the expected footfall,” he said.
According to Vijay Anand, Kumbh Mela Nodal Officer, the state government is estimated to gain more than Rs 25,000 crore by various means like taxes, rentals, and other charges from the Maha Kumbh Mela.
Nonetheless, it is expected that the overall amount of money exchanged at the mela site will be far greater, between Rs 2 lakh crore and Rs 3 lakh crore.
“The earnings of small-scale vendors, such as tempo operators, rickshaw pullers, flower sellers at temple sites, those selling memorabilia, boat operators, and even hotels, will contribute significantly to the local economy. The entire ecosystem around the Kumbh Mela is expected to experience a massive economic boom,” he added.
