Security agencies are leaving no stones unturned in their investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in West Bengal government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

On Friday morning, a team of the Enforcement Directorate conducted raids at the residence of Sandip Ghosh who is the former principal of RG Kar Hospital.

The ED raid was as part of its investigation into an alleged financial scam at the state-run hospital.

Ghosh, who as per BJP, had issued a letter on August 10 ordering renovation near the Seminar Hall where the young doctor’s body was found after being raped and murdered a day ago (August 9), is currently in the custody of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Ghosh served as the principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from February 2021 to September 2023. In October last year, he was transferred, but within a month’s time, he was brought back to the position which he held until the day the young trainee doctor was raped and murdered in the facility.

On Monday, the CBI arrested 53-year-old Ghosh alongwith three others – his security guard Afsar Ali, and hospital vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara. They were arrested in connection with the alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Hospital.

On Tuesday, a court in Kolkata remanded Ghosh and others to CBI custody for eight days. The agency had requested a 10-day custody, citing a “large nexus” in the corruption case that required further investigation.

SC refuses to hear Sandip Ghosh’s plea

On Wednesday, Ghosh, had filed a plea with the Supreme Court challenging a Calcutta High Court decision that ordered a CBI investigation into his alleged financial irregularities.

However, on Friday (September 6), the apex court refused to entertain Ghosh’s plea and said he doesn’t have locus to intervene in public interest litigation alleging financial irregularities.

CBI grills Sandip Ghosh

The CBI has been questioning Ghosh since August 16 regarding the rape and murder of the trainee doctor and accusations of financial misconduct during his tenure.

The rage and anger among doctors and people at large against Ghosh intensified after the heinous crime at RG Kar Hospital and when he was produced in a court on Tuesday, he was “assaulted”.
