West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete the entire probe in rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Hospital and facilitate the hanging of culprits by August 18.
Banerjee, who is facing intense criticism following the brutal rape and murder of an on-duty trainee doctor at the state-run hospital, further claimed that the Kolkata Police had already completed 90 per cent of the investigation in the case.
“Within Sunday (August 18), CBI has to facilitate hanging of the guilty and complete the entire probe. Our Kolkata Police has completed 90 per cent of the probe,” the West Bengal CM said.
Further, Banerjee said that on August 17, a protest march will be carried out in all the blocks demanding for capital punishment of the criminal in the Kolkata rape and murder case.
She further said that on August 18, there will be a demonstration in all the blocks. On August 19, the day of Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi, a programme to demand capital punishment of the guilty will be marked, ANI quoted Banerjee as saying.
On August 9, a semi-naked body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Earlier, police claimed she had died by suicide but later confirmed that she was raped and murdered.
The incident sparked protests by resident doctors in Kolkata and most parts of India, demanding speedy justice for the trainee doctor. A civic volunteer has been arrested in the case.
On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI. Banerjee welcomed the court’s decision and said: “We will abide by the Calcutta high court’s order and extend all support to the CBI. We have no problem with the CBI taking over the case, as we want it solved as soon as possible.”
The chief minister also urged the junior doctors and interns, who have been on strike for six days, to return to work, highlighting the serious impact on medical services.
“I urge doctors to resume work. You have been protesting for several days, and I haven’t interfered. But you must remember your duty to serve the people, as you have taken an oath. Three people have died, including a minor and a pregnant woman. If it pleases you, I will touch your feet and request that you return to your duties,” she said.
