While doctors have refused to stop protesting in Kolkata despite the Supreme Court’s order asking them to resume work, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday issued notices to as many as 51 doctors, staff and interns for allegedly “promoting a culture of intimidation.”

The Kolkata rape case has outraged the entire city with members of the medical fraternity seeking justice for the 31-year-old victim, who was raped and killed in RG Kar Hospital, and demanding better working conditions for doctors in government hospitals across the state. From candlelight marches to 3-4 km long human chains, protestors are leaving no stone unturned to raise their voice against atrocities against women.

The protesting junior doctors are also engaged in a tussle with the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government which has urged them to resume work, claiming that many patients have died due to their absence.

What actions will be taken against the doctors?

Meanwhile, a Special Council Meeting held on Monday at the RG Kar Hospital decided to bar 51 doctors from the college campus and prohibit them from engaging in college activities, according to a report by Indian Express.

The doctors who have been served the notices are believed to be closely associated with the former principal of RG Kar and a prime suspect in the case Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh is currently in the custody of CBI.

Among those who were accused of promoting a culture of intimidation in the medical college were two senior resident doctors, one medical research scientist, 20 house staff, 11 interns and other medical (MBBS) students, according to the report.

“The esteemed College Authorities have taken notice of the grave concerns raised by the Resident Doctors’ Association of RG Kar Medical College during the Special Council Meeting on September 9, 2024. In a formal letter, it was brought to our attention that they have been engaging in behaviour that promotes a culture of intimidation, endangering the democratic atmosphere of the institution,” the resolution of the Special Council Meeting said.

The doctors and other staff in question have been summoned before an Enquiry Committee on September 11 to “defend their innocence”.
