Doctors across India have gone on strike on Monday (August 12) protesting against the sexual assault and murder of 31-year-old postgraduate trainee woman doctor who was raped and murdered on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Hospital on Friday.

The protest call has been given by the Federation Of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), demanding justice for victims. Meanwhile, doctors in West Bengal have ceased work and have called for an indefinite strike.

The doctors’ strike is expected to severely disrupt patient care.

What has happened in RG Kar hospital in Kolkata?

On Friday morning, a body of the woman doctor was found at a seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital with injuries on them.

She was on night duty on Thursday (August 8) and her last call was to her mother which was around 11:15 pm.

After finishing the nightly rounds duty, she had dinner with two other doctors junior to her. Around 2 am, she retired to the seminar hall to rest for the remainder of the night.

Two other doctors went to call her on Friday morning but found her body partially clothed. The cops ruled out suicide and a case was registered at the Tala Police Station.

“This is not a case of suicide; the woman was murdered following sexual assault,” PTI quoted a police officer as saying.

Notably, the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the emergency building, where the victim, a postgraduate trainee of chest medicine, went to rest had no CCTV cameras.

Why did she go to the seminar room to rest?

A doctor from the hospital, who preferred to remain anonymous, said, “She went to the seminar room because there was no separate on-call room to rest.”

Five people who were with her on night duty on Thursday were quizzed by the cops.

As per the inquest report, the woman doctor was found in a semi-naked condition, with a pink coloured kurti and white upper garment lying on a blue mattress. The mattress had many strands of hair and was soaked in blood.

Also, a pair of jeans and an undergarment were found near the body. A hair clip was found near the private parts.

The doctor’s family has lodged a complaint of rape and murder with the Tala police station.

What did the RG Kar woman doctor autopsy report find?

The preliminary autopsy report indicated she was sexually abused before being murder.

The four-page autopsy report has a list of 10 injuries on the body from the eyes to the ankles, including bleeding from her private parts, eyes, mouth, and various parts of her body.

There were injuries on her face, neck, belly, left leg, right hand, ring finger, and lips.

“There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face and nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg… neck, in her right hand, ring finger and… lips,” the report said.

As per a senior police official, quoted by PTI, said that the woman doctor’s neck bone was also found broken. “It seems that she was first strangulated and then smothered to death. We are waiting for the full report of the autopsy, which will help us identify the culprits,” he further said.

The cop also said that the crime occurred between 3 and 6 pm.

The autopsy was conducted on-camera and was witnessed by two women and the victim’s mother, PTI reported.

The Kolkata Police has identified and arrested a suspect in the case identified as Sanjay Roy. He is an outsider who had easy access to several departments of the hospital due to his role as a civic volunteer in the police welfare board.

As per sources to News18, Roy was arrested after his activities were found to be quite suspicious.

How was the accused in RG Kar doctor’s rape & murder case arrested?

As per reports, Roy was tracked down after cops found a bluetooth headset at the crime scene. Police then tracked the CCTV footage that placed him at the crime spot.
