Another Hindu temple has been vandalised in Canada with anti-India graffiti painted on the walls. The BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Edmonton was targetted on Tuesday morning, informed Chandra Arya, an India-origin Canadaian MP from Nepean, who also said that “Hindu-Canadians are legitimately concerned.”
Following the incident, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Canada posted the picture of the vandalised temple and “strongly denounced Hinduphobic graffiti and vandalism at BAPS Mandir in Edmonton.”
The VHP in Canada also urged the Justin Trudeau-led Canadian government to “act decisively against the growing extremist ideology propelling hate against the peace-loving Hindu community in the country.”
‘Khalistani extremists seem to get away with ease’
Highlighting the surging hate and violence by Khalistani extremists in Canada, Arya said, “As I have always been saying, Khalistani extremists seems to get away with ease with their public rhetoric of hate and violence.”
The anti-India activities by Khalistan supporters have increased following the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June last year.
“Again, let me put this on the record: Hindu-Canadians are legitimately concerned. Like a broken record, I again call on Canadian law enforcement agencies to take this issue seriously before these rhetorics get translated into physical action against Hindu-Canadians,” Arya, a Liberal MP known for his advocacy on multicultural issues, further said.
The Indian-origin Canadian MP further pointed out that in the last few years, Hindu temples in Greater Toronto Area, British Columbia and other places in Canada were being vandalised with hateful graffiti.
“Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) last year publicly called for Hindus to go back to India,” Arya said, adding, “Khalistan supporters publicly celebrated in Brampton and Vancouver the assassination of (former Indian) Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and brandishing images of deadly weapons.”
Not the first temple attack in Canada
The attack at BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton adds to a string of similar incidents documented in recent years. In 2023, a Hindu temple in Windsor was defaced with anti-India graffiti, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for action from both Canadian and Indian officials.
Earlier incidents in Mississauga and Brampton saw temples similarly targeted, drawing strong reactions from the Indian community in Canada.
