There are two regions the Bharatiya Janata Party was eyeing this election season, the South and Bengal. As the counting process continues, the West Bengal trend shows an interesting turn of events.
As of 10:30 am, Trinamool Congress was leading in 29 seats while BJP was ahead in 11 Lok Sabha constituencies.
West Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha seats. The saffron party won 19 seats in 2019.
From Sandeshkhali’s Rekha Patra to former Calcutta HC judge Abhijeet Ganguly, the BJP has fielded several heavyweights to expand its footprint in the state.
Early trends show Krishnagar’s sitting MP from TMC, Mahua Moitra, trailing behind BJP’s Amrita Roy, aka ‘Rani Ma’, who is a descendant of the royal family.
Meanwhile, Abhijit Ganguly, who made his debut in politics earlier this year, was trailing from the Tamluk constituency.

Rekha Patra, BJP’s candidate from Basirhat, where Sandeshkhali lies, was trailing behind her opponent from the TMC, Nurul Islam. Patra was one of the first women to lodge a complaint against TMC’s Sheikh Shahjahan over the alleged sexual harassment case.
Actor-turned-politician Rachna Banerjee, TMC’s candidate from Hooghly, is leading by 7,146 votes. Banerjee is up against BJP’s Locket Chatterjee.
Polls were conducted in all seven phases in West Bengal. The state has been witnessing a number of corruption charges against key TMC leaders, many of whom are currently facing ED cases.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance is leading in 294 seats, crossing the majority mark while the INDIA bloc is ahead in 228 seats.
