Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday that the Indian government remains ‘alert’ following China’s announcement to construct a dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border, PTI reported.
Beijing recently revealed plans for the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra, set to surpass the scale of the Three Gorges Dam.
“The Indian government is on alert,” Rajnath Singh said when asked about the mega dam during an event in Agra.
Singh was in Agra to attend the 57th state-level meet of Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh. The event was organised at the city’s Mufeed-e-Aam Inter College.
While addressing the event, Singh underlined India’s emerging influence in the world. “Earlier, people did not take it seriously when India spoke at international forums, but now when India speaks, the world listens,” Singh said.
China’s state-owned media, Xinhua, reported on December 25, 2024, that the Chinese government had approved the construction of a mega hydropower project on the Brahmaputra River.
India responded to it by saying that it would monitor the situation and take necessary actions to protect its interests. India also urged China to ensure that the dam’s construction does not negatively affect the downstream states of the river.
There are speculations that the dam will create significant impact on the downstream areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
