India asked Canada to act against individuals making threats against Indian leaders. The statement came in the light of a video released by the Khalistani separatist, in which he threatened Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya and Indians living in Canada.

In a weekly media briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned Pannun’s threats directed at Indian-origin leaders in Canada.

Reacting to reports that Canada has charged two individuals for online threats against PM Justin Trudeau and other leaders, he said, “We have noted these reports. When a democracy applies different standards to the rule of law and freedom of expression, it exposes its own double standards”.

“We expect Canada to take action against anti-India elements who have targeted Indian leaders, institutions, airlines, and diplomats with violence. We urge Canada to apply similar measures to those threatening India,” he said.

Talking about the recent development in Bangladesh which has been reeling under deadly clashes with protesting students demanding the Sheikh Hasina-led government to scrap a controversial job quota system, he said “So far 6,700 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh.”

Over 100 people were killed in the clashes that began weeks ago.

Being a close neighbour and friend of Bangladesh, we are hopeful that situation would return to normal in that country, he said.
