In a shocking incident at the Mumbai airport on Saturday, hundreds of passengers experienced a very close call when an IndiGo plane landed on the same runway as an Air India jet taking off. The Directorate of Civil Aviation has derostered an Air Traffic Control official and initiated an investigation.

Both aircraft may be seen using the same runway in a video that has gone viral on social media. The IndiGo aircraft is spotted landing shortly after the Air India aircraft takes off. The Air India plane took off for Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala as the IndiGo plane was traveling from Indore to Mumbai.

In a statement, IndiGo confirmed that the pilot of the Indore-Mumbai flight complied with the ATC’s instructions.

“On Jun 8, 2024 IndiGo flight 6E 6053 from Indore was given landing clearance by ATC at Mumbai Airport. The Pilot in Command continued the approach and landing and followed ATC instructions. At IndiGo, passenger safety is paramount to us, and we have reported the incident as per procedure,” the statement said.

Air India also reported that the aircraft was cleared for takeoff by the ATC.

“AI657 from Mumbai to Trivandrum was on take-off roll on June 8. The Air India aircraft was cleared by Air Traffic Control to enter the runway and subsequently cleared for take-off. The Air India aircraft continued with the take-off movement in accordance with laid down procedures. An investigation has been initiated by the authorities to find out more on the clearance given to the airlines,” the airline said in a statement.
