Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra began her electoral innings on Wednesday by filing her nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha bypoll in Kerala’s Wayanad.

The seat was vacated by her brother and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

She disclosed assets of over Rs 12 crore. All election candidates are required to submit an affidavit, which includes financial details.

According to the electoral affidavit, Priyanka Gandhi and her spouse, Robert Vadra, have a total of Rs 77.55 crore in movable and immovable assets.

Priyanka Gandhi’s assets

In her affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Priyanka Gandhi disclosed that she possesses movable assets valued at Rs 4.27 crore.

This includes Rs 52,000 cash in hand, Rs 3.67 lakh in three bank accounts, a Honda CRV car gifted by her husband Robert Vadra, Rs 17.38 lakh in her PPF account, over 4,400 grammes (gross) of gold worth Rs 1.15 crore, and silver worth Rs 29 lakh.

Mutual fund investments comprise a large portion of her financial balance; Rs 2.25 crore was invested in the Franklin India Flexi Cap Fund. As of September 30, she owns 13,200 units of this fund.

The 52-year-old politician also disclosed that her immovable assets were Rs 7.41 crore.

These assets included two half-shares of inherited agricultural land in the Mehrauli area of New Delhi, as well as a half-share in a farmhouse structure nearby. The total value of these assets is currently Rs 2.10 crore.

In addition, according to her affidavit, she has a 12,000 square feet residential property in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, that she purchased on her own and is currently valued at about Rs 5.63 crore.

Her spouse, Robert Vadra, on the other hand, is far wealthier than his wife.

His movable assets total an impressive Rs 37.92 crore. This comprises a Suzuki motorcycle valued at Rs 4.22 lakh, a Mini Cooper at Rs 1.5 lakh, a Land Cruiser worth Rs 53 lakh, and Rs 2.18 lakh in cash on hand.

He owns four commercial properties in Gurgaon and Noida, totalling Rs 27.64 crore in immovable assets.

Source of income, liabilities and more

In her nomination papers, Priyanka Gandhi stated that she earned a total of Rs 46.39 lakh for the fiscal year 2023-2024. In the fiscal year 2022-2023, she made Rs 47.21 lakh.

She also stated that her source of income includes rent, interest from banks, investments and other means.

The Wayanad candidate has a liability worth Rs 15.75 lakh. According to her declaration, she is also facing income tax reassessment proceedings for the 2012–13 assessment year, which means she must pay more than Rs 15 lakh in taxes.

For FY 2023–24, Robert Vadra reported an income of Rs 15.09 lakh, a considerable decrease from the Rs 55.58 lakh he claimed for 2019–20.

He has a liability worth Rs 10 crore. Among his sources of income include investments, bank interest, business, and rent.

Cases against her

There are two FIRs and a forest department’s notice against her, the affidavit stated.

An FIR was filed in Madhya Pradesh in 2023 on the basis of a complaint of misleading tweets, alleging cheating and forgery under sections 420 and 469 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Priyanka Gandhi is charged with violating IPC sections 188, 269, and 270 in the second FIR, which was filed in Uttar Pradesh in 2020, because she protested the Hathras incident.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Priyanka and her brother Rahul Gandhi were arrested for trying to meet with the family of a Dalit rape victim in violation of prohibited orders and the Epidemic Diseases Act.

Education

Priyanka Gandhi stated that she holds a BA Hons degree in Psychology from Delhi University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies gained via distance learning from the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom.

For the uninitiated, this is her first time running for office. She had gotten involved in politics before the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

‘Campaigning for myself for the first time’

After filing her nomination, Priyanka Gandhi said she has 35 years of political experience, which began at the age of 17 when she campaigned for her late father, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1989.

She arrived in Wayanad on Tuesday evening accompanied by her mother and Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary party. She held a massive roadshow at Kalpetta, Kerala, with her brother Rahul Gandhi.

Priyanka Gandhi also said that the people of Wayanad stood with her brother when the whole world had turned its back on him.

“My whole family will always remain indebted to you and grateful to you for this support. He (Rahul) is sad to leave you, but I have promised him that I will only strengthen the bond between you and him.”

‘An exceptional MP for Wayanad’

Speaking to the crowd, Rahul Gandhi urged the people of the hills to look after his sister in the same way that they had protected and cared for him at his most vulnerable moments.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the 54-year-old had won the seats in Rae Bareli and Wayanad. Later on, he gave up the Kerala seat. He announced that Priyanka Gandhi, his younger sister, would run in the Congress bypolls.

Later on, he was appointed the Lok Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition.

Meanwhile, Rahul announced that his overall assets for the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections were Rs 20.4 crore, which included Rs 9.25 crore in movable assets and Rs 11.15 crore in immovable ones.
