Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated a string of key portfolios to former chief ministers.

There are six former CMs in Modi’s new government of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). While four of these former CMs are from the BJP, two are from NDA partners.

These former CMs are BJP’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan of Madhya Pradesh, Manohar Lal Khattar, Rajnath Singh of Uttar Pradesh, Sarbananda Sonowal of Assam, Hindustan Awam Morcha’s (HAM) Jitan Ram Manjhi of Bihar, and Janata Dal-Secular’s (JD-S) HD Kumaraswami.

Of these ministers, Rajnath is among the senior-most figures in the government and the BJP. He has been a minister since 2014 in all the governments led by Modi. Sonowal was also part of the 2nd Modi Ministry. The other four —Shivraj, Khattar, Manjhi, and Kumaraswami— have been roped in from the states.

Shivraj and Khattar were replaced as the CMs of their respective states just months before the Lok Sabha elections.

Here are the portfolios that these former chief ministers have got in 3rd Modi Ministry:

Both Rajnath and Sonowal —the only ministers part of previous Modi governments— have retained their portfolios from the 2nd Modi Ministry.
