Yesterday (4 June) was a defining day for Indian democracy with the 2024 Lok Sabha result being announced, today is no less important because of the numbers that the various alliances have accumulated. The NDA alliance managed to get majority with more than 290 seats as the INDIA bloc defied expectations with a seat tally of more than 230 seats.

The fact that the BJP did not win an outright majority has highlighted Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) and Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP who are part of the BJP-led NDA.

Union cabinet meeting

A Union cabinet meeting is scheduled for today. It will reportedly be the final such meeting as the current government’s term is set to end. The new government will take oath in the coming few days, reportedly on 9 June.

INDI Alliance crucial meeting

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Sharad Pawar earlier said that a meeting of the Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc of parties was likely in New Delhi today.

The INDIA bloc will decide whether to approach former partners such as the JD(U) and the TDP to attempt government formation at the Centre, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.

To a question on who would be the next PM, Pawar said, “We have not given it a thought. I am not sure if the INDIA alliance can form government. We will meet tomorrow and take a decision unanimously on the future course of action,” he said.

Kingmaker Kumar in Delhi

Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar will on Wednesday take part in the NDA meeting scheduled in the national capital, highly placed sources said here. Kumar, whose party is set to grab 12 out of the state’s 40 seats, will be leaving for Delhi in the morning.

Kejriwal’s bail plea

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s interim bail plea is scheduled for today as he surrendered himself to jail after his initial interim bail on 2 June.
