Indians are no longer afraid of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the United States.

At an event in which he addressed the Indian diaspora in the US state of Texas, Rahul said that Indians stopped fearing PM Modi after the election results.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, even as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured the majority and formed the government, Modi’s BJP lost the majority on its own. Rahul said that within minutes of the election results, the fear of the BJP and the PM vanished among Indians.

“These are huge achievements, not of the people of India but of the people of India who realised we are not going to accept attacks on the Constitution, religion, or states,” said Rahul, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul lashes out at RSS over ideology

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was the main target of Rahul at the event in Texas’ Dallas — as has been the case in his previously foreign visits.

Rahul said that while the RSS believed in a singular and regressive idea of India, the Congress party believed in the multiplicity of ideas for India and in a liberal society. He said that while the RSS wants to confine women to kitchens, the Congress believes in women’s aspirations.

Rahul also linked the “ridiculous” thinking of a large number of Indian males towards women with the RSS.

“The first thing is to think of women the same way you think of men. This is part of the ideological fight with the BJP and the RSS. The BJP and RSS believe that women should restricted their roles, stay at home, cook food, not talk much, and we believe women should aspire to be whatever they want,” said Rahul.

Further slamming the RSS, Rahul said that the Indian universities are being captured by the organisation as most of the vice chancellors (VCs) are affiliated with the RSS. As the organisations believes in a particular perspective of Indian history, life, and future, this is not good and amounts to “ideological capture” of India’s educational institutions, said Rahul.

This is not the first time that Rahul has slammed the RSS abroad. Last year, during a visit to the United Kingdom, Rahul had dubbed the RSS a secret society and equated it with the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group in the Middle East that’s widely considered to be a terrorist organisation. The Palestinian terrorist group Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood.

“You can call it a secret society. It’s built along the lines of the Muslim Brotherhood and the idea is to use the democratic contest to come to power and then subvert the democratic contest afterwards,” said Rahul at the time.

Rahul further said, “It’s shocked me at how successful they’ve been at capturing the different institutions of our country: the press, judiciary, Parliament, Election Commission – all the institutions are under pressure, under threat and controlled in one way or another.”
