With the conclusion of the seventh and the last phase of Lok Sabha elections, attention has now shifted to Exit polls.
Who will form the next government? Will the BJP be able to cross the 400-mark? How many seats will the INDI Alliance win? Exit polls have the answer to these questions.
They give a fair idea of a particular party’s performance in the elections and are based on interviews of voters. They are conducted by several organisations that survey people as soon as they cast their votes.
The ruling NDA and Opposition alliance INDIA put up a tough fight during the polls with both BJP and Congress exuding confidence over their win in the Lok Sabha elections.
As we approach June 4, here’s a look at what the exit polls say about the fate of parties in the northeast and union territories (UTs).
Assam
Of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the NDA is expected to win 10-13 seats and the Congress is expected to win two to five seats.
Within the NDA, the BJP is expected to win 8-11 seats.
The AIUDF is also expected to win one seat.
Elections were conducted in three phases in Assam from April 19 to May 7. The state recorded a voter turnout of 85.45 per cent in the third phase.
The Opposition is eyeing to consolidate Muslim voters in the states who felt alienated by BJP’s campaign. However, the BJP has an edge in Assam owing to its extensive groundwork and the implementation of welfare schemes.
The key candidates were Gaurav Gogoi (Congress), Rameswar Teli (BJP), Topon Kumar Gogoi (BJP), Naba Kumar Sarania (CPIM).
In 2019, the saffron party won nine seats and Congress won three.
Rest of Northeast & UTs
Of 15 Lok Sabha seats in the rest of Northeast India and all the remaining union territories, the NDA is expected to win 13 seats. Of these 13 seats, the BJP is expected to win nine.
Arunachal Pradesh has two LS seats and voting for these constituencies was held in the first phase of elections on April 19. The key candidates were Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal West (BJP), Tapir Gao from Arunachal East (BJP) and Nabam Tuki from Arunachal West (Congress). In 2019, BJP won both seats in the state.
In Manipur, which saw massive outrage over violence between ethnic groups in the state, elections were held in two phases for the two seats from April 19 or April 26. The key candidates were Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from Inner Manipur (Congress), Alfred K Arthur from Outer Manipur (Congress), Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh from Inner Manipur (BJP). In 2019, BJP won one seat in the state.
Meghalaya saw elections happen in one phase for the two Lok Sabha seats on April 19. Vincent H Pala from Shillong (Congress), Agatha K Sangma from Tura (National People’s Party). In 2019, Congress won one of the seats in Manipur.
Mizoram has only one Lok Sabha seat. The state went to polls on April 19 during the first phase of elections. The key candidates were Richard Vanlalhmangaiha (Zoram People’s Movement) and K. Vanlalvena (Mizo National Front). In 2019, the seat was won by Mizo National Front.
In Nagaland, elections were held in one phase for the one Lok Sabha seat. The key candidates were Chumben Murry (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party) and S Supongmeren Jamir (Congress). In 2019, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive party won the seat.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory, has one seat. Polls were conducted in the islands on April 19. In 2019, Congress won the seat.
Another union territory, Daman and Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli, have two Lok Sabha seats one of which was won by BJP.
