The Israeli ambassador to India Rubin Reuben Azhar said that Israel had warned Iran through multiple countries including India, urging restraint and caution.
In an exclusive interview with Firstpost Managing Editor Palki Sharma, he accused Iran of escalating the conflict by attacking Israel directly, rather than relying on its regional proxies. “We sent messages, multiple messages through many countries, including India, telling Iran they shouldn’t attack Israel because the price would be dear,” he said.
The Israeli ambassador said that the October 7th attacks on Israel were unprecedented. He termed the attacks on Israel as “sheer evil,” marked by atrocities not seen since World War II, including the killing of children and families.
Responding to a question, the ambassador clarified that Israel has long been under attack by Iran, driven by an ideology bent on Israel’s destruction. He expressed disappointment in the international community’s insufficient pressure on Tehran, stressing that Israel’s retaliatory strikes were necessary for self-defence.
“We have to retaliate because imagine that we wouldn’t retaliate. What would be the consequences not only for Israel but for the region and the world that a country in flagrant violation of international law sends hundreds of missiles to terrorize another country? If it is not being answered,” he said.
Ambassador Azhar lauded India’s firm stance against terrorism while expressing frustration with other global powers for not taking a clearer position on the Iranian threat.
