Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde resigned from his position as Maharashtra Chief Minister on Tuesday. He submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, who has asked him to continue serving as caretaker Chief Minister for the time being.

Shinde was accompanied by his deputies, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, during the meeting. The term of the Maharashtra assembly is set to conclude on November 26.

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde are reportedly competing for the chief ministerial position in Maharashtra. The BJP’s claim to the chief minister’s post has been strengthened by its performance in the assembly elections, where it emerged as the single-largest party, winning 132 out of the 148 seats it contested.

The BJP’s ally, Shiv Sena, secured 57 seats, while Ajit Pawar’s National Congress Party obtained 41 seats. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced a significant setback, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray winning only 20 seats. Congress managed to secure 16 seats, and the NCP(SP) led by Sharad Pawar won just 10 seats.

While seeking the sought-after position, Shiv Sena referenced the political arrangement of the NDA in Bihar, where Nitish Kumar serves as the chief minister despite the BJP holding a ‘big brother’ status within the coalition.

Sheetal Mhatre, spokesperson for the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, told reporters today that the Maratha community desires Shinde to remain in the chief minister’s position. She emphasized that it is important for Shinde to continue as chief minister ahead of the upcoming local body elections in the state.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske called for Eknath Shinde to be appointed as the chief minister of Maharashtra, stating that the BJP needs to respond appropriately to those who claim the party uses and discards its allies.
