The Election Commission is yet to announce the dates for upcoming Delhi assembly polls. Meanwhile, key rivals – Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress have declared their candidates on most of the seats.
One of the most watched seats in the national capital is New Delhi, where the BJP has pitted Parvesh Verma against AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal; the Congress, on the other hand, has fielded former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s son Sandeep Dikshit.
Notably, Arvind Kejriwal has been winning the New Delhi seat since 2013, when he first defeated Sheila Dikshit with a margin of over 26,000 votes. Furthermore, the AAP supremo emerged victorious on the seat in 2014 and 2019 elections respectively.
However, Arvind Kejriwal might find himself in a triangular contest on the New Delhi seat. Parvesh Verma, belonging to the Jaat community, is likely to attract those voters in large numbers. Furthermore, Verma is also expected to capture votes from the traditional voters of the saffron party.
Along with the Punjabi and Khani communities, the Brahmins are also in a dominating position on the seat. In such a case, if the votes get divided, Kejriwal may land into difficulty.
Pertinent to note that the New Delhi seat is considered a stronghold for Sandeep Dikshit; late Sheila Dikshit was a three-time MLA from this seat.
