The much-awaited decision about the new chief minister of Delhi was made at a quarter past 8 on Wednesday (February 19) following the BJP legislature party meeting held at the party’s Delhi unit office.

The BJP has announced that Rekha Gupta, a three-time MLA from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, as the new CM of Delhi.

Gupta is set to take the oath as Chief Minister of Delhi tomorrow– February 20.

She is the 14th chief minister belonging to the BJP in the country at the moment. She is also the only woman chief minister from the party, and the fourth woman chief minister of the state.

Apart from this, Rekha Gupta is the first woman chief minister from BJP since Vasundhara Raje stepped down from that post in Rajasthan.

The BJP has come to power after nearly 27 years, defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the February 5 Delhi Assembly polls.

The meeting was held in the presence of BJP’s central observers– Ravi Shankar Prasad and OP Dhankar. The new chief minister, after being chosen by the party MLAs, is next set to meet Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at the Raj Niwas to stake claim to power.

Meanwhile, preparations are in full swing for a grand swearing-in ceremony of the new government at Ramleela Ground on Thursday afternoon.

Around 50,000 people, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues and the chief minister of NDA ruled states among other guests, will attend the ceremony.

The names that were doing the rounds for the new chief minister included Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal; former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay; and other leaders such as Pawan Sharma, Ashish Sood and Shikha Rai, in addition to Gupta herself, of course.

Many within the party had also believed that the BJP leadership could choose a “dark horse” as Delhi’s next chief minister, a strategy the party opted for in Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
