Summers and ice creams go hand in hand as many want to relish varieties of flavoured frozen dessert, but most people became apprehensive after a 26-year-old Mumbai doctor found a human finger in an ice cream cone his sister had ordered for him online.
Now, police, investing the case, suspect that the human finger found inside the ice cream cone could be of a staff working at the Pune factory of Yummo Ice Creams.
Cops have found that a staff at the Pune factory of an ice cream maker had suffered a finger injury in an accident and the finger found in the ice cream of the Mumbai doctor could belong to this employee.
A report by NDTV quoted police sources as saying that during the investigation, it was found that the ice cream in which the piece of finger was found was packed on the day when the accident occurred.
What next?
The cops have samples for DNA test at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and get confirmation on whether the finger belonged to the employee.
What’s the Mumbai ice cream case?
The Mumbai ice cream case which is being investigated by the police raised serious concerns over food safety standards. On June 12, Orlem Brandon Serrao, a 26-year-old doctor from Malad West in Mumbai, found a human finger in an ice cream cone which his sister had ordered online for him.
The doctor said he was appalled to find a piece of flesh, apparently a severed human thumb, in the frozen dessert. He soon lodged a complaint with the police.
“After eating half of the ice cream, I felt a solid piece in my mouth. I thought it could be a nut or a chocolate piece and spat it out to check what it was,” Dr Serrao said.
“I am a doctor, so I know how body parts look like. When I carefully examined it, I noticed the nails and fingerprint impressions under it. It resembled a thumb. I am traumatised,” he added.
Based on his complaint, the police registered a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food and drink) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), against Yummo ice cream company officials.
Also, the piece of flesh, suspected to be a piece of human finger, was sent for forensic examination to ascertain whether it is a part of the human body, cops said.
What did the ice cream company say?
Responding to the incident, Yummo Ice Creams said it had stopped production at the third-party facility.
“We have stopped manufacturing at this third-party facility, isolated the said product at the facility and our warehouses, and are in the process of doing the same at the market level,” a company spokesperson said.
Licence of manufacturer supplying ice cream to Yummo suspended
The Food Safety Standards of India (FSSAI) Western Region has suspended the licence of the manufacturer that supplies ice cream to Yummo.
“The premises of the ice cream manufacturer have been inspected by a team of FSSAI’s Western Region Office and its licence has been suspended,” the food safety regulator has said.
FSSAI further said the manufacturer who delivered the ice cream is based in Indapur, Pune, and has a central licence as well.
