The Centre on Thursday appointed Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the new Chief Justice of India. The Supreme Court Judge will become the 51st CJI after DY Chandrachud.

Justice Khanna will assume office on November 11, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghawal said on X.

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” he said.

Justice Chandrachud took over as the CJI on November 8, 2022.

Justice Khanna will have a tenure of a little over six months as CJI and will demit office on May 13, 2025.

Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?

Justice Khanna initially practised at District Courts in TisHazari as well as the Delhi High Court after enrolling as an advocate in 1983.

He has had experience working on cases involving constitutional law, criminal law, company law, and environmental law, among other things.

He has also served as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department. In 2004, he was appointed as the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

He was elevated as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and a year later was was made a permanent judge. In 2019, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.

Notable cases

Justice Khanna has been a part of several high-profile cases and was part of the bench that granted bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. He also dealt with cases concerning other Aam Aadmi Party leaders like Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh who are accused of their involvement in the Delhi liquor scam.

The to-be CJI was also part of the bench that heard the EVM-VVPAT matter earlier this year.

He was also involved in the Constitution Bench rulings on Article 370 and the Electoral Bonds cases. In the latter, he wrote a separate but agreeing opinion, highlighting how the anonymous bond scheme infringed upon Constitutional rights.
