The Centre on Monday announced the creation of five new districts in the union territory (UT) of Ladakh.

The five new districts are named Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang. So far, Leh and Kargil were the only two districts in Ladakh.

Making the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Union Home Minister said that the decision was taken as part of a commitment to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh.

“In pursuit of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny,” said Shah.

Sharing Shah’s post, Modi said that the decision “is a step towards better governance and prosperity”. He further said that the formation of new districts will bring governance closer to people.

Until 2019, Ladakh was part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Then, in August 2019, the Narendra Modi government scrapped J&K’s special status and converted the state into two UTs of J&K and Ladakh.
