The Union Cabinet on Monday announced the assistance for the building of 3 crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

This was the first Cabinet meeting of the new government that was sworn-in yesterday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Modi also approved the release of 17th instalment of PM Kisan Nidhi that will benefit 9.3 crore farmers.

2 big decisions on 1st day of Modi 3.0

On the first day of the new government, two decisions related to housing and farmers were taken.

While in the very first decision, Modi approved the release of 17th instalment of PM Kisan Nidhi that will benefits 9.3 crore farmers. It will distribute around Rs 20,000 crores among the farmers.

“Ours is a government fully committed to Kisan Kalyan. It is therefore fitting that the first file signed on taking charge is related to farmer welfare. We want to keep working even more for the farmers and the agriculture sector in the times to come,” said Modi as he approved the instalment.

In the first decision of the Cabinet, it was decided to extend assistance to an additional 3 crore rural and urban households to address the housing needs arising from the growing number of eligible families, said the government in a press release.

Since 2015-16, the Centre has implemented the PMAY to provide assistance to the eligible rural and urban households for construction of houses with basic amenities. Under PMAY, a total of 4.21 crore houses have been completed for the eligible poor families under the housing schemes in the last 10 years, according to the press release.

All the houses constructed under PMAY are provided basic amenities such as toilets, LPG connection, electricity connection, tap water connection etc. This is done in collaboration with other schemes of central and state governments.
