The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the creation of 12 industrial smart cities which are expected to bring in 10 lakh new jobs.

The smart cities are planned under the framework of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP).

The 12 smart cities will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 28,602 crore, said the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in a press release.

The CCEA further said the smart cities will provide as many as 10 lakh jobs.

Where will smart cities be built?

The 12 industrial smart cities will be built in 10 states along six major corridors, according to CCEA.

The industrial areas will be located in Khurpia in Uttrakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Dighi in, Maharashtra, Palakkad in Kerela, Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh, and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan, as per the CCEA’s press release.

The CCEA further said that these smart cities will be key for achieving $2 trillion in exports by 2030.

The CCEA further said that the smart cities will provide up to 10 lakh direct jobs and 30 lakh indirect jobs.

The smart cities will not only provide livelihood opportunities but also contribute to the socioeconomic upliftment of the regions where these projects are being implemented, said the CCEA.

The 12 smart cities will be built on the ‘plug-n-play’ and ‘walk-to-work’ concepts which will ensure that the cities are equipped with advanced infrastructure that supports sustainable and efficient industrial operations, according to the press release.

“Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the projects will feature multi-modal connectivity infrastructure, ensuring seamless movement of people, goods, and services. The industrial cities are envisioned to be growth centers for transformation of whole region,” said the CCEA in the release.
