A Vistara flight going from Mumbai to Frankfurt made an unscheduled landing in eastern Turkey on Friday (September 6) due to a bomb alert.

A tissue paper that had the words “bomb on airplane” scribbled on it was discovered in the toilet while the flight was mid-air, according to a report by Times of India.

The flight had a total of 247 people onboard.

“Flight UK27 from Mumbai to Frankfurt has been diverted to Turkey (Erzurum airport) due to security reasons and has landed safely at 1905 hours,” Vistara posted on X.

Moneycontrol quoted a spokesperson of the airline as saying that The aircraft has safely landed at the Erzurum Airport. As per protocol, the relevant authorities were immediately alerted and we are fully cooperating with the security agencies to complete the mandatory security checks.

The spokesperson said that the crew onboard the flight noted a security concern and after that the relevant authorities were informed.

Turkish media reported the governor of Erzurum province, Mustafa Ciftci, as saying that 247 passengers and crew were on board, and all flights in and out of the airport had been suspended.

The passengers were removed from the plane and individually searched before being allowed into the airport terminal. A bomb detection squad inspected the plane and its luggage hold, as stated by the governor.

Whether the threat was a hoax or not remains unclear.
