Bhole Baba, whose 121 followers died in a stampede during his ‘satsang’ in Hathras, has five criminal cases against him, including molestation. Also, he was posted as a head constable in Etawah about 28 years ago, but was terminated from services after allegations of rape against him.

He, however, keeps telling his disciples that he took a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) from Uttar Pradesh Police

5 criminal cases against Bhole Baba

Bhole Baba has been known for his controversial ‘satsangs’. Five criminal cases against him that have been filed in Agra, Etawah, Kasganj, Farrukhabad and Rajasthan’s Dausa.

Self-styled godman Suraj Pal, who is known as Bhole Baba to his followers, told them that he had served in the intelligence department of the Uttar Pradesh police and had quit his job after 17 years of service to embark on a spiritual journey as a preacher.

Who is Bhole Baba?

Bhole Baba, a 58-year-old self-styled godman, on Tuesday (June 2) led a ‘satsang’ in Hathras in which an incident of stampede took place when he suddenly left the venue and his followers started rushing towards his car to collect dust/soil stirred up by tires.

He hails from a Dalit family in Bahadur Nagar village of Kasganj district, about 65 km from Hathras where the stampede occurred.

In 1999, he changed his name to Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari and started holding ‘satsangs’. He told his followers that he felt an inclination towards spirituality and world peace.

After completing his education from Etah district and before joining UP police, he assisted his father in farming during his young days.

Bhole Baba, who as per his devotees had no religious mentor, has been organising satsangs with his wife which are usually attended by hundreds of people. He used to hold satsangs every Tuesday and before the Hathras stampede incident. Last week, he held a similar event in the Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh.

He has zero social media presence and has followers beyond Uttar Pradesh to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Also, the preacher and his acolytes have maintained a distance from the media.

At the peak of Covid-19 pandemic in 2022, Bhole Baba held a similar satsang in UP’s Farrukhabad. While the district administration permitted only 50 people to attend the event, more than 50,000 people reached the event venue.

The self-styled godman has a security team named “Narayani Sena” that consists of men and women guards who escort him from his ashram to the satsang venues.

Zaffar Ali, husband of Bahadur Nagar village pradhan, Najis Khanam was quoted as saying by media reports that Bhole Baba has no children and his wife is known as Matashree.

As per Ali, Bhole Baba has built an ashram on his 30-bigha land in the village where people from other districts and different states would visit to seek his blessings. They were provided accommodation at the ashram, he said.

Ali further said that Bhole Baba left the village about five years ago, suspecting a conspiracy against him.

“We heard he is now residing in Rajasthan. Last year, he returned to the village and entrusted his property to a trust. A manager now oversees the affairs of the ashram,” Ali said.
